Born in 2003, in Filderstadt/Germany, Lionel Martin spent the first two years of his life in Perth/Australia. He had his first cello lesson at the age of five with Joseph Hasten, who has taught him ever since. Recipient of numerous prizes and awards at the annual competition Jugend Musiziert including nine first prizes received from 2016 to 2018, Lionel has been awarded scholarships from the Jürgen Ponto Foundation, the Bechstein Foundation, and the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. Demonstrating exceptional artistic maturity, Lionel pursues a wide variety of musical activities and has a special love for chamber music. He regularly performs in Germany, France, and Switzerland with his piano trio and various ensembles. In November 2016, Lionel debuted with the Haydn C major concert, accompanied by the Tübingen Kammermusikkreis. He appears frequently as soloist with the ensemble ±12Vc and the chamber orchestra of the Tübingen School of Music, most recently in Paris and Aix-en-Provence. In May 2017, Lionel performed Tchaikovsky’s Variations on the Rococo Theme with several orchestras, culminating in a performance with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, conducted by Dan Ettinger. This was followed by solo performances with the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra at the Rococo Theater Schwetzingen (2017), the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra in Lithuania, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra at the Oberstdorfer Musiksommer (2018). In September 2018 he made his debut recital at the Lucerne Festival and was nominated for the ''Prix Young Artist of the Year'' at the Festival of Nations in Bad Wörishofen.
